Building a Foundation

As part of working with children with autism, our staff gets a lot of professional development training. Just today we had another important session discussing DRO or Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviors. Applied Behavior Analysis terms aside, one thing we discussed and I believe anyone who ever had, worked or been around children needs to know is that young children require a schedule. Regardless of how you feel about organization yourself, children feel happier, more confident and more relaxed if they know what is to come, who they see every day and what they do. I am not saying don’t ever surprise them or be flexible, but be mindful of their need for consistency to keep them secure and comfortable.
